Yes! I do use Antivirus on the Mac. Here’s why…
It’s long been maintained that Mac’s are safer than PC’s when it comes to Viruses and Malware. But safer doesn’t mean that risks and threats are non existent. I want to be safe not sorry.
More Reasons Why do I use Antivirus on the Mac?
I use my Mac for business purposes, therefore I choose to keep a high quality Mac Antivirus program always running on my Mac. The product I use is Intego’s Mac Internet Security X8 Internet Security X8 includes a full featured Antivirus and Firewall for about $49/year. This Application can even scan iPhone, iPads, and USB Flash drives when you connect them up to your Mac.
I like the peace of mind knowing that I am being proactive in terms of my Security Best Practices. I don’t want to get “caught with my pants down” so to speak in terms on internet security.
Also because my time is money, $50/year is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that I will be able to keep working and not lose hours or days if I do encounter a security problem.
Why Pay for Mac Antivirus Solutions?
When you pay for an Antivirus Application, in general what you get is Real-Time Scanning. That means you just install the Application and you can forget about it. If you ever come across a Virus or Malware, the Antivirus Application will let you know and clean it for you.
Free Antivirus Applications tend to be manual. You have to remember to run scan every day/week/month. You have to remember to scan or the Application doesn’t do anything for you. If you have a really good Todo System or Calendar System in place, you may be able to use a Free Software well.
What if I don’t want to pay that much for Antivirus on the Mac?
There are some great Free options for you. I would suggest you download and install two Applications. These Applications are Free for Home use. And they are very good.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t think I’ve ever needed the Antivirus on the Mac. I’ve just paid for it for years because it’s like Insurance. You don’t need it until you need it. Then you wish you had it.
